Looking forward to the Midwest Management Summit

Since Microsoft stopped their Microsoft Management Summit and integrated it into their TechEd it still felt like a void was left there in the System Center space. Of course the MMS in the old days started as a community thing and in the end it ended up as a Microsoft conference with some community input. And of course now it was gone. :-/

Well, the community decided to step back in! B) :D :p :) :)) :>> (yeah i better not include too many smileys here).

User groups and MVP's and other community leaders and experts are jumping in and now the Midwest Management Summit (so also MMS in short) has been born. It is filled with great speakers, many from the community and MVP sides from all over the world. It is gearing up to be a great event and specialized into the field of System Center in connection also with PowerShell, Clouds and so on.

Have a look at this great lineup of sessions in the schedule: http://mms2014.sched.org/

Next I can inform you that I also will be speaking there in two sessions along with my long time friend, SCOM specialist and MVP Cameron Fuller

Check out our sessions here: http://mms2014.sched.org/speaker/bob.cornelissen

MMS2014SPeaker

If you have not registered yet for this event, give it a second thought and go to: http://mms.mnscug.org/ and book your ticket http://mms2014.sched.org/tickets

I hope to see you there. If you are attending the MMS, please feel free to catch me there and have a chat! That is also what these community based events are all about. I am very much looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible during the upcoming events in November. I will be attending the MVP Summit and this MMS of course!

System Center Universe is tonight

The absolutely fabulous System Center Universe 2014 is today, 30 January 2014 in Houston during the whole day. In my case in Europe it is the second part of the afternoon until passed midnight. B)

Check out this great agenda with top speakers:
http://systemcenteruniverse.com/agenda.htm

I am definately going to watch remotely through the live stream. I have been told that efforts will be made to record the sessions as well for later reference in case we need to miss something due to other lesser obligations such as work or sleep or whatever. Tssss :>
There are a good number of User Group locations where you can also watch the live stream in the comfort of the company of your System Center friends from nearby.

In past years our friends at Catapult Systems did a great job of organizing this event both on location and online. It has even gotten a following of other separate System Center Universe events in Europe and Asia at least. Fantastic! Not only fantastic that there are events in different parts of the world, but also in timing. Because there is no more MMS and it is merged with Teched USA there has to be more opportunities to talk about SYstem Center during the year and also in different locations. Of course never forget the User Groups which are very active all over the world. As you know I am also involved in one ( WMUG NL ). That is why we can appreciate any community based effort and I am happy to see many people also from Microsoft joining in to help with these kind of initiatives.

Also a shout out to our friends at the SCU and Houston and of course our friends at Catalpult Systems from the Dutch user group: Windows Management User Group Netherlands !!! Good luck and have lots of fun over there!

So go ahead and watch this edition of SCU !!!

System Center 2012 R2 UR1 is out

SCOM, DPM, SCVMM, System Center, SCOM 2012 Send feedback »

Microsoft released Update Rollup 1 for System Center 2012 R2 which has fixes for SCOM, DPM and VMM.

Let me first say a few things:

 1. Be carefull to first check out which version you are downloading. There are UR releases for SCOM 2012, for 2012 SP1 and for 2012 R2. These can not be mixed around. The story today is about the update on top of 2012 R2.
 2. Read the KB articles belonging to these updates all the way. They contain info on what this update fixes, but also very important installation information, known issues, installation order and so on. For example for SCOM and VMM there are manual steps like running SQL scripts and importing management packs, and for SCOM the updates are split into the usual SCOM pieces and the SCOM Unix/Linux monitoring pieces.
 3. Test all updates in a test environment. I know some people might not like me saying this, but given the problems which occurred with some updates coming from Microsoft over the last lets say 14 months you definately want to be testing it in your test environment. Perhaps also wait for 2 weeks or more before doing that to see if people are blogging about problems before even putting it in an official test environment.

For SCOM 2012 R2 UR1 the KB article and information can be found here:
port.microsoft.com/kb/2904678

Good luck patching!

SCOM KB - PRO group names contain Chinese characters in SCOM

SCOM, SCVMM, System Center, SCOM 2012 Send feedback »

Microsoft published a new KB article. This is for the combination of VMM 2012 and SCOM 2012 and running PRO mp's. It can happen that the resulting groups contain CHinese characters. This can occur due to a missing languagecode in the SCOM database. The KB article contains the method to fix this issue if it affects you.

UR3 for System Center 2012 SP1 released

SCOM, DPM, SCVMM, System Center, SCOM 2012 Send feedback »

Last night Microsoft released UR3 for System Center 2012 SP1. This covers at least a few products according to the page where the UR3 is explained over here.

For now it says App Controller and DPM and SCOM and VMM in this KB article.
Not all updates will necessarily be available at the same time by the way. Some downloads might be available today and some might be available at a later time.

For myself the SCOM pieces are the first items of interest for today ;) ;) ;)
Will check out the rest tomorrow.

I saw the download link for the SCOM update was not shown yet on the KB page, but you can get the SCOM downloads here: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=2852565

I already saw these popping up in my WSUS server as well.

What does the SCOM update contain???

According to the KB article today it should contain the following items (taken directly from that KB page):

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Operations Manager Update (KB2852565)

Issue 1
The Audit Collection Services (ACS) dtPrincipal tables sometimes are missing a user's domain name.

Issue 2
If you decide to see more than two days' worth of data in a Service Level Dashboard view, the data is displayed from the Daily Aggregated data and does not contain the last two days' worth of data.

Issue 3
The Health Service stops collecting performance data on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Issue 4
The web console crashes when the Active Alerts view and the Windows Computer State view are accessed at the same time when Internet Explorer 9 is used.

Issue 5
A memory leak may occur in the console when the performance widgets dashboard is left open.

Issue 6
When the Operator role is used, many 26319 events are generated. This causes performance problems.

Issue 7
Health Service availability reports are incorrect because of duplicate entries in the HealthServiceOutage table.

Issue 8
When the Orchestrator Integration pack is under a high-load scenario, a software development kit (SDK) process deadlock may occur.

Issue 9
This update includes fixes to the following Advisor Connector issues:•Group opt-in
•Microsoft System Center 2012 Operations Manager gateway and Microsoft monitoring
•Windows PowerShell cmdlets
•Health state
•Microsoft Knowledge Base article links in Operations Manager console alerts

Operations Manager - UNIX and Linux Monitoring (Management Pack Update)

Issue 1
The Solaris agent cannot be installed on Solaris 11.1 because it does not find the prerequisite OpenSSL package.

Issue 2
Knowledge editing pages are not displayed when monitors that were created by the Shell Command templates are edited.

Issue 3
Log files that are encoded in schemes other than ASCII cannot be monitored.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright, thats it for SCOM it seems :p :)

Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2 Preview bits available

SCOM, DPM, SCVMM, Service Manager, System Center, SCOM 2012, Windows 2012, Configuration Manager Send feedback »

Since a few hours the Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2 Preview bits are available on MSDN and TechNet. SO we can go ahead and download those files. It could be that relating to what access you have to these platforms you will see a few which are yet unavailable, but they will be available soon. In my case I could access all of them. B)

Also available are the preview of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview, and the SQL 2014 CTP1 preview also seems to be here already if you are a die hard SQL fan.

SO now we can start playing around with some Windows and System Center R2 products and see what changed and what we like :p

New Savision whitepaper by Damian Flynn, Unraveling the Network with SCVMM 2012 SP1

SCOM, SCVMM, System Center Send feedback »

Savision has a tradition of providing free whitepapers to the community about System Center related topics written by industry specialists. A few months ago I was discussing with them about a new free product they were releasing (Cloud Advisor for System Center Virtual Machine Manager), and they asked me who would be a very critical and vocal reviewer of its possibilities. I directly pointed them to my fellow SCCDM MVP Damian Flynn. In the end this resulted in Damian writing a whitepaper for Savision and the community at large about Virtual Networking in SCVMM 2012 SP1. Mind you this whitepaper does not talk about the Savision product, but about SCVMM features and in a practical way.

This is something new in VMM and sometimes hard to figure out on your own, but it is a very important subject which will prepare you for the future of networking within virtual networks. And dont forget that the future is already here with SCVMM 2012 SP1. I have found that Damian Flynn is one of those people who knows what he is talking about and this is certainly one of those subjects he is the absolute authority on.

This free whitepaper can be downloaded from the Savision site from here:
Unravelling the Network with SCVMM 2012

Also Damian will be giving a webinar (on two dates for your convenience) where he explains more about the subject and will be available for questions. See the link above for the registration details for those webinars.

And again also from my side a big thank you to Savision for providing the community with these great resources! And a very warm thank you to Damian Flynn for clearing up the mist around this subject and helping everybody understand what this is about!
